Giving SI another perpective
This isn't an effort to diss SI... I repeat: this isn't an effort to diss SI. No... I'm not talking about Sports Illustrated but the other SI... Singapore Idol (do note the lack of enthusiasm on my end)...
Oh well, everyone has been giving their 2 cents worth about SI, and I think basically it has come down to 2 camps: the pro-SI, and the anti-SI. Does Singapore really lack talent (maybe that's why we have to import them: think Li Jiawei), or that the really talented just doesn't think that parading themselves onstage and having 4 million (correction: maybe 20,000 gullible teenagers) decide their fate just doesn't validify it?
SI has become a national institution, such that on broadcast day, streets are empty, and nearly every TV screen (at least those in the HDB flats near my place) is tuned into the program. Are we fanatics? Or does SI just give us hope? A hope that any average Joe on the street that can hold a 2-bit cadence may eventually be crowned a local icon(alright, I must admit that Taufik being the Ad-man for 7-Eleven just doesn't cut it as Local Icon... Singa the Courtesy Lion does).
But the point is, instead of seeing SI as a complete waste of time (and $0.60 if you vote once) why don't we look at it from a more social perspective? That everyone has the potential to be someone, only if he/she is bold enough to take that first step?
Practice hope. As hopefulness becomes a habit, you can achieve a permanently happy spirit. - Norman Vincent Peale
