I am Singaporean

I was born in the old Kandang Kerbau Hospital, where my mom was told that she got a boy for her firstborn.
I was called a name that others still mix up to be a girl's.
I managed to finish my first 19 years of education with many visits to the principal's office.
And with my mom in tow.
I saw GST rise from nothing to the current 5%,
And still have no qualms about buying my skinny Grande Ice Latte from Starbucks at $5.45.
National Service to me was a pain,
The friends that I made were nothing gained.
I hate it when my own school treats me like a second-class citizen,
When the Indian and Chinese scholars are considered talents.
The stupid yellow box followed me,
All the way from Tekong to the Bukit Panjang Kopitiam.
I curse and swear at the flaws of the education system,
But silently feel proud when Majullah Singapura is sung.
This place has been home to me,
My Family,
My God-parents,
My Friends.
And most importantly,
This was where I found my girlfriend.

I am Singaporean... Or so they say...

Take it easy, Keep it real...
